Gustavo Petro Says U.S. Strike in the Caribbean Destroyed a Colombian Boat, Warns of a ‘New Theater of War’

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said Wednesday that the most recent vessel targeted and destroyed by U.S. military forces as part of their anti-narcotics operations was Colombian, warning that a “new theater of war” has opened in the Caribbean Sea.

“Evidence suggests the last speedboat bombed was Colombian, with Colombian citizens on board. I hope their families come forward and report it,” the Colombian leader wrote on X (formerly Twitter), adding that “this is not a war against smuggling; it is a war over oil and it must be stopped by the world.”

“The aggression is against all of Latin America and the Caribbean,” Petro added, responding to a post by California Senator Adam Schiff, who said he would push a vote to block President Trump from using the Armed Forces to carry out strikes in the Caribbean Sea.

“Congress has not authorized these attacks. They are illegal and could drag the United States into another war,” the U.S. lawmaker said. Petro replied: “Senator Adam Schiff is correct. I am now in a meeting with European governments and will say the same. A new theater of war has opened: the Caribbean,” the Colombian head of state said.
